Founded in 1986 by Terrance Kelly, the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir (OIGC) spreads joy and unity through Black gospel and spiritual music. With over 300 singers, from ages 5 to 100, across various faiths and backgrounds, OIGC is dedicated to preserving and advancing Black gospel traditions.
OIGC’s Community Engagement Program reaches underserved communities, featuring concerts for celebration and support. This includes the non-audition Oakland Interfaith Community Choir, founded in 2013, and the Oakland Interfaith Kids Choir, launched in 2022.
In 2022, OIGC also expanded its youth programs by integrating the Oakland Youth Chorus, now totaling five ensembles for ages 5 to 18. Committed to passing on the legacy of Black gospel and spirituals, OIGC brings this powerful music to diverse audiences.
Terrance Kelly is a beloved force in gospel and jazz, known for his dynamic voice, soulful artistry, and joyful presence. With a career rich in performance and arrangement, he’s collaborated with Linda Ronstadt, Kronos Quartet, and brought gospel to TV and film. He’s the heart behind OIGC’s music, winning an Emmy for his choral work in their KGO-TV PSA.
Honored by KQED and with the Dr. Edwin Hawkins Excellence Award, Terrance also leads worship at Imani Community Church and teaches gospel around the world. Raised by his musical parents, Ed and Faye Kelly, he’s carrying their legacy forward with every note.
