Alam Khan

Alam Khan, Khalifa of the Seni Maihar Gharana and son of the legendary late Sarod maestro, Ali Akbar Khan, is a sarodist, composer, and producer based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Training in the Maihar Seni Gharana (a classical tradition dating back to the 16th century) from the age of seven, Alam learned under the careful guidance of his father. From 1996 to 2006, he accompanied his father internationally, establishing himself as the face of a new generation of Maihar Gharana Sarod players. Alam has performed alongside some of the finest Indian musicians of our time and has collaborated with traditional and contemporary artists across various genres. His innovative approach has earned him recognition as a visionary and progressive artist.

Following his father’s passing in 2009, Alam became the head of Indian classical instrumental studies at the Ali Akbar College of Music (AACM). Along with teaching at AACM, he currently teaches at both the California Institute of the Arts and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Alam is dedicated to preserving, performing, and sharing the rich tradition of Indian classical music with the world, while helping it flourish in the modern age.

“2022 marks the centennial of the birth of Indian classical legend and sarod pioneer Ali Akbar Khan. A hundred years on, the legacy and boundaries of the sarod are still being pushed forward by his own. The late maestro’s son — Bay Area-bred sarod player, composer, and producer Alam Khan.” — Rolling Stone India
