A Freight original! Our 2nd installment of One Song All Night focuses on the archetypal waltz-time heartbreak ballad: “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” written by Hank Williams. Audience members will hear five radically different re-imaginations of this emotive classic, by a line-up of carefully curated local artists from a wide range of genres. As always, we’ll begin by listening to the original, digging a little into the origin story, and touching on famous covers throughout the years.

David Boyce
David Boyce spent his formative years in NYC, soaking up the city's vast multi-cultural offerings. In 4th grade, he discovered his father’s extensive jazz record collection and became obsessed with Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, John and Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra, Ornette Coleman... the great Black music masters. At the age of 13, he began his studies of the saxophone, starting on alto and then switching to tenor. Music quickly became the focus of his non-academic endeavors. He graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. in Industrial and Labor Relations, taught elementary/junior high school in the Bronx. After his plans to move into the city became thwarted due to gentrification and high rents, he moved out to San Francisco just in time for the Loma Prieta earthquake. Living in the Bay Area offered him the chance to pursue music as a full time career. In 1991, he co-founded the iconic AfroFuturist jazz trio Broun Fellinis (31 years running) and became an active freelance musician involved in many musical pursuits that include all styles of Jazz, Post rock, HipHop, World music, Improv and Electronica. His music has taken him to Europe, Japan and Canada as well as around the US. Currently, he performs with Broun Fellinis, Black Quarterback, Red Fast Luck, Shimmering Leaves, Radio Sofia, 6Roses, The Supplicants and Black Edgar's Musik Box.
Short-Term Fun
Short-Term Fun is a 5-part vocal group of Bay Area vocalists who love to create harmony together. They perform a variety of original vocal arrangements from the pop, folk, and rock genres. Some arrangements are a cappella while others are accompanied by a 4-part instrumental band.
Camilo Landau & Javier Navarrette
Camilo Landau and Javier Navarrette are a force of rhythm and spontaneous invention. Having collaborated for over 20 years in over 20 bands, the guitarist and percussionist are known for their electrifying, improvisational performances. Their sound is deeply rooted in the fiery music of the Afro-Latin diaspora, driven by Navarrette's masterful knowledge of Cuban, Brazilian, and West African rhythms and Landau's powerful, quixotic guitar sounds. Together, they channel this deep tradition through their own distinct, boundary-pushing California twist.
Evan Price
Evan Price is a violinist and composer best known for his 10 years with the Turtle Island Quartet and his 27 years with The Hot Club of San Francisco. At home in classical music, jazz, and various fiddling genres, his own music reflects that broad expertise. In 2016, he premiered his own jazz violin concerto with the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, and 2024 saw the premier of his concerto for two mandolins, “A Game Of Cat and Mike,” featuring Caterina Lichtenberg and Mike Marshall. He is the recipient of 2 GRAMMY® awards for his work with Turtle Island.
Martin Luther McCoy
Martin Luther McCoy is a visionary soul singer who blends traditional jazz, funk, rock, and soul music into a fluid, electrifying sound. His vibe is a liquid-cooled, versatile funk. His powerful voice has led him to perform as the frontman for SFJAZZ Collective and The Roots and was recently featured at Mt. Tamalpais Sound Summit’s tribute to Sly and the Family Stone. A singer songwriter at heart, he is perhaps best known for his breakout role as a Jimi Hendrix-inspired character in the acclaimed film Across the Universe (Sony/Columbia), directed by Julie Taymor. His collaborations with dance music innovator Miguel Migs have also garnered international attention; their latest track, “Keep on Dreaming,” was released earlier this year on Salted Music. Luther has a distinctive knack for reinterpretation, often covering classics with a fresh, edgy twist. His rendition of Elton John's classic "I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues" is not to be missed. Versatile and genre-defying, Luther’s version of “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry" will reimagine a portion of this treasured classic but ultimately bring the sway of his voice and heavy soul to add weight to this reinterpretation. Martin will accompany himself on guitar.
