+How-to-Jam Class
Description
Do you want to play the music you love with other folks at parties and jams? This is a class that will show you how! You’ll learn how to lead a song in a group and help others to play along with you. You’ll practice hearing chord changes and learning skills that make jamming with others successful and fun. And you’ll have the great pleasure of sitting down with other musicians and creating those spontaneous arrangements that seem like magic when you hear them.
I’ll bring starter songs for all of us to jam on together at first, and then you can bring in songs you want to practice jamming on. This class is for beginning/intermediate level musicians who want to play songs in the country, bluegrass, and folk styles on guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, dobro, or bass.
The songs in these styles are played with a few simple chords, and feature verses, choruses, instrumental breaks and harmonies. We’ll learn what makes for good ensemble playing and how each person and instrument can contribute to the overall sound.
If jamming’s been a mystery for you, this class will open the doors and get you going! This class can introduce you to the joys of making music with other people and performing the songs you love.

Richard Brandenburg has been a performing singer and songwriter around the Bay Area for many years. He has taught vocals, guitar, songwriting, and country repertoire at various music camps. He works with private students, teaches lead and harmony vocal workshops, and leads an ongoing jam workshop at his home in San Francisco.
